BGMEA Launches Structured Dialogue Initiative to Strengthen Bangladesh's SME Apparel Exporters

BGMEA hosted an interactive dialogue with SME member factories, forming a working committee led by Director Ms. Rumana Rashid to address challenges in buyer engagement, sustainability compliance, and access to finance.

Structured Engagement with SME Backbone

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has launched a structured engagement programme with small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) apparel manufacturers, recognising that SMEs form the backbone of the country's ready-made garment (RMG) export base. The interactive dialogue brought together industry stakeholders to discuss practical pathways for enhancing the competitiveness of Bangladesh's SME apparel manufacturers in an increasingly demanding global market.

Priority Issues on the Agenda

The session focused on understanding the evolving business challenges of SME factories and exploring collaborative solutions across buyer engagement, sustainability compliance, technology adoption, access to finance, and workforce skill development. SME manufacturers reported that scaling up to meet international buyers' minimum order quantities, affording green-building certification, and accessing affordable working capital remain persistent barriers to growth.

Leadership and International Participation

The dialogue was chaired by BGMEA Director Mr. Faisal Samad, with Director Ms. Rumana Rashid in attendance. The session also benefited from the participation of Ms. Nuria Lopez, Commercial Counsellor at the Embassy of Spain in Dhaka, signalling international interest in supporting the development of Bangladesh's SME apparel sector. The presence of a European Union diplomat reflects growing international awareness that SME competitiveness will determine Bangladesh's apparel export resilience after LDC graduation.

Working Committee Formed

At the conclusion of the session, BGMEA formed a dedicated working committee to drive follow-up action. Ms. Rumana Rashid will serve as Director-in-Charge, with Mr. Md Rubayet Ahmed, Chairman of the BGMEA Standing Committee on SMEs, and selected SME member representatives rounding out the committee. The committee's mandate includes preparing a diagnostic report on SME constraints and proposing a time-bound action plan within the next quarter.

Continued Commitment to Ease of Doing Business

As part of its broader commitment to ease of doing business, BGMEA will organise more such sessions on priority issues, creating regular opportunities for dialogue, knowledge sharing, and collaborative problem-solving between the association leadership and its SME membership. The association indicated that future sessions will focus on specific themes — including sustainability finance, buyer match-making, and digital compliance — based on SME member feedback.
