The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and HSBC Bangladesh have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to help Bangladesh's ready-made garment (RMG) industry expand into new and emerging international markets. The agreement was signed on July 13, 2026 at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara, Dhaka.

Signatories and Leadership

The MoU was signed by Mahmud Hasan Khan, President of BGMEA, and Md. Mahbub ur Rahman, Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Bangladesh. The signing ceremony was attended by senior representatives from both organizations, including BGMEA Director Shah Rayeed Chowdhury, who highlighted the shared commitment to raising Bangladesh's global profile through stronger engagement with international buyers and stakeholders.

Hong Kong Apparel Roadshow Planned

As part of the partnership, BGMEA and HSBC will jointly organize a Bangladesh Apparel Roadshow in Hong Kong — one of Asia's leading business and trading hubs. The event will showcase Bangladesh's manufacturing capabilities, product diversity, innovation, and sustainability achievements to international buyers and business leaders. It will also complement BATEXPO, Bangladesh's flagship textile and apparel exhibition, by creating new business networking and market development opportunities.

Leadership Perspectives

Mahmud Hasan Khan (President, BGMEA) noted that HSBC's global banking network and strong relationships with international apparel buyers will help connect Bangladesh with new sourcing partners and accelerate the industry's market-diversification strategy.

Md. Mahbub ur Rahman (CEO, HSBC Bangladesh) reaffirmed HSBC's commitment to supporting the sustainable growth of Bangladesh's apparel industry and helping the sector strengthen its global competitiveness through strategic financial partnerships.

Shah Rayeed Chowdhury (Director, BGMEA) emphasized that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to raising Bangladesh's global profile through stronger engagement with international buyers and stakeholders across multiple geographies.

Strategic Context

The collaboration is part of BGMEA's broader strategy to diversify export destinations, strengthen global partnerships, and create new growth opportunities for Bangladesh's apparel industry. With traditional markets in the European Union and United States showing slower growth, the push into newer markets — particularly in East Asia, the Middle East, and emerging economies — has become a strategic priority for the sector. The HSBC partnership leverages the bank's global network to facilitate buyer introductions, trade finance, and market-entry support for Bangladeshi exporters.
