Export Guide — Your progress Step 2 of 8
Get your Tax Identification Number (TIN) and Business Identification Number (BIN) from the National Board of Revenue (NBR). TIN is mandatory for any company; BIN is required if your annual turnover exceeds BDT 50 lakh. Both are free, online, and instant.

Full Guide

Once your company is incorporated, the next step is to register with the National Board of Revenue (NBR) for tax purposes. This involves obtaining two key identifiers: the Tax Identification Number (TIN) and the Business Identification Number (BIN, formerly known as VAT Registration Certificate).

The TIN is a 12-digit number issued to every taxable person or entity in Bangladesh. Every company director must also have their personal TIN. The TIN is required for: opening bank accounts, applying for trade licenses, obtaining ERC, filing annual tax returns, claiming cash incentives, and remitting foreign exchange. Application is via the NBR e-TIN portal (secure.etin.gov.bd) — for a company, you'll need the Certificate of Incorporation, MoA, directors' personal TINs, and the company's registered address proof.

The BIN is mandatory under the VAT and Supplementary Duty Act 2012 for any business with annual turnover above BDT 50 lakh (approximately USD 4,500). For exporters, BIN registration is recommended even if your turnover is below this threshold because: (a) you need it to file zero-rated VAT returns and claim input tax refunds, (b) buyers often ask for the BIN on commercial invoices, and (c) you need it to claim cash incentives.

BIN application is via the NBR VAT Online Portal (vat.gov.bd). The process requires: TIN, trade license, Certificate of Incorporation, bank account details, and premises rental agreement or ownership document. Once approved, you receive a 9-digit BIN with a QR code certificate. You must file monthly VAT returns (Form 9.1) by the 15th of the following month, and an annual return by 31 December.

For exporters, the critical concept is 'zero-rated supply' — export sales attract 0% VAT, and you can claim full refund of input VAT paid on raw materials, packaging, and logistics. This makes your exports effectively VAT-free, improving price competitiveness. The refund is processed via Form 9.3 (input tax refund) and typically takes 60-90 days.

Do-This Checklist

  • Each director obtains personal TIN (if not already)
  • Apply for company TIN at secure.etin.gov.bd
  • Receive TIN certificate instantly (PDF download)
  • Apply for BIN at vat.gov.bd (online submission)
  • NBR inspector visits premises (within 7 days of submission)
  • Receive BIN certificate with QR code
  • Set up monthly VAT return filing calendar

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Using a residential address as business premises without trade license
  • Directors without personal TIN cannot be added to company TIN
  • BIN inspector visit missed — application cancelled
  • Not filing monthly VAT returns even with zero turnover — penalty BDT 1,000/month
